Pleasure, Pain Points, and Politicians

November 03, 2015

Anarcho-Preneur Episode 005

What is the difference between persuasion and manipulation? It is often said that the State uses coercion, while the market relies on persuasion. I would contend that there is a grey area, in between, that both sometimes take advantage of. The midpoint of persuasion and coercion is manipulation.

Ever notice how politicians will appeal to your feels? "Do it for the children". "We have to save the cute polar bears". ""We can't let the terrorists win". It's a;ways a play at the heartstrings. But why is this method so effective?

Well, it's actually a marketing technique, called marketing towards emotions. And, in this episode, I explain why it's so powerful. I start by looking at the psychological aspects of what drives us to buy, whether it's a product, service, or an idea. Then, I explain how this knowledge can be used for good and how it is often used for bad.

Customer empathy is important to have. Being able to empathize with idealogical opponents is also important in any form of activism. There is a very thin line between persuasion and manipulation, and by the end of this episode, you will see it, clearly. You will know how to persuade, without being manipulative. You will also be less susceptible to manipulation from others, be they politicians or be they conmen in the marketplace. Download.
