Episode 04 – Old Photos

September 09, 2021

Hey, Uncle Tuck here. Let me share my thoughts about keeping old pictures. I’m not talking about the family pics. I’m talking about pics from your past. Whether it’s an old relationship, old friends, etc. Now I’ve been taking pictures since the early 80s (yes, I just dated myself LOL). And I have tons of negatives from various stages all the way up till the early 2000s when I moved over to digital.

Now some of those images are from earlier relationships/situationships etc. But many are from elementary, high school, and college. With even some from hanging out with friends throughout the years. And since I’m a photographer at heart I cannot see myself throwing away any of those moments. As they’re a part of me and share my story.

But what about those old relationship images. Those are just as much a part of my life, but when you have a new life do you just dispose of those old images. For me, that’s a hard no. Now granted I may not keep them on display, but they will reside in a photo album or in a digital album. I just don’t believe in getting rid of memories. Whether good or bad, they all had a part in making me the person I am today.

And at times I may look at them to recall some great times. So, what about the sensitive stuff, you know the freaky just for your photos. Well, those I keep on tuck (no pun intended). But I most certainly won’t share those nor toss them out. Why? Like I said I’m a photographer and those images also document a time in my life.

Fortunately, my lady totally gets this and has no issue with me holding on to all my images. Many won’t see the light of day, but I couldn’t see myself tossing them out. And believe me, none of my ex’s will have to worry about any of those sexy just for us photos (and videos) seeing the light of day. Many of those images have been transferred over to digital and stored on an encrypted drive not connected to my network. So, no worries about it being hacked and exposed.

To me, old photos are like old songs. Some songs I first heard while dealing with someone. And just because I no longer deal with that person, I’m not going to stop listing to that song as I’m mature enough to leave any negative memories in the past and just enjoy the music. It wasn’t always like that as some songs take me back to what can be described as a difficult time. But seeing how I overcame that dark moment, listing to those songs doesn’t affect me like that.

Same with old photos, some may remind me of times that weren’t so stellar. Others bring a smile to my face as if I was back in that moment. So as for old photos, videos, etc., I’ll keep them around. And yes,  I do have explicit details on what to do with that drive and any physical images at the time of my passing.

Which hopefully be so damn far in the future that it wouldn’t matter much anyhow.
