Archive: Decision-Making Under Pressure

May 09, 2018

The finest Leaders panels bring together the great and the good from sport and beyond and this session from the 2015 Leaders Performance Summit in London was a classic of the genre. Moderated by Professor Vincent Walsh, England and Saracens full-back Alex Goode told the tale of decision-making from the sporting angle and was complemented by Wing Commander Martin Higgins, head of the RAF’s Red Arrows, and Greg Davies, who was at that time the Head of Behavioural Finance at Barclays Banks.

Each faces pressure in their roles and it has the potential to impact upon their decision-making if they are unable to face it head on and over the course of the afternoon they each explained the steps they can take to avoid the worst – while also touching upon their procedures at those moments when things go wrong.

Also on the agenda was:

- Accepting mistakes in training as a grounding for continuous improvement;

- The importance of establishing a set of principles and rules in performance;

- The role of self-criticism;

- The potential for stress to shorten time and emotional horizons;

- The importance of saying ‘the unthinkable’;
