We are all probably tired of hearing the word recession, but it is—unfortunately—the state we find ourselves in today. You probably have come across varied opinions on how to manage. Some would say if the writing is on the wall, it’s time to jump ship. Others feel that they should just hunker down, keep a low profile and try to weather the storm. While personally, I don’t think that there is a way to 100% recession proof anyone’s job, I do believe that there are steps that can be taken to at least help.

Some experts state that this is the worst time to look for a new job. But let’s be honest if the water cooler talk is that your department is about to feel the axe, what will you do?

An excellent first step is to be open and honest with your leaders and start a dialogue about what the company plans to do. Depending on your particular relationship, this can be as broad or granular as you feel comfortable. Define whether your company is prepared for times of trouble and keep tabs on what is happening to avoid being blindsided.

While all of this is going on, continue to network and stay up to date with what is available so you will be ready if you need to make a move.

One of the best ways to help recession-proof your career is to be flexible and diversify your portfolio. Continue your education and branch out to new areas within your industry. Build relationships with other departments and find ways to be an asset to them. Essentially position yourself to be indispensable to multiple people within your organization and be ready to jump in wherever and whenever needed.
