Reconnecting with Your Connections

April 21, 2022
Episode 59

Pre-Covid, we attended many events and tradeshows that afforded us the ability to grow our network. But have we lost touch with many of our connections over the years? How can we reconnect with our connections?

Host(s): Jonathan Saar from Market Me Social

Show Highlights

Let me share an experience with you. It’s actually what prompted me to talk about this topic. I recently received a message from two connections that I hadn’t heard from in a while. Why did they reach out? They just wanted to check in on me and see how I was doing and arrange a time for a quick call to catch up. How awesome is that!! I really needed that! And it got me thinking about how I could do a better job at maintaining my connections. So I came up with three rules that I plan on following to help me reconnect and stay connected.

Key Questions/Topics Covered

Rule #1 – Stay connected

Sounds redundant, I know, but when you think about it, the simplest way to avoid the need to reconnect is to stay connected. I have already started to reach out and check in with people in my network that I haven’t chatted with in a while. Moving forward, I am creating a pattern of behavior of doing this regularly, so it becomes part of my routine, which leads me to rule #2.

Rule #2 – Creating new habits

The best way to create a new habit is to find a way to include the new activity into your existing routine in a way that suits you best. That way, you look forward to it rather than dread it as an added chore. For me, I knew that I could devote 15-30 minutes at the end of my day to go through my socials and see what my network is up to. Being able to celebrate people's success and enjoy industry insights that are being shared is the perfect end to my workday. Doing this every day ensures that I won’t lose touch.

Rule #3 – Go the extra mile for your connections

Circling back to the experience I shared initially, having those two people reach out and show a genuine interest in what’s happening in my life and career truly warmed my heart. I want to do better and follow their example. I am determined to be consistent and go the extra mile for my network. So if you haven’t heard from me in a while, expect a call.

The last few years have been rough and left many people feeling very disconnected. Make it one of your goals to reconnect with your network. I challenge you to start with five people. Reach out to five people this week, and please share your experience. It made my day, and I hope it does for your connections too.

Class dismissed!

Jonathan (00:15): Hello everyone and welcome to Episode 59 of the Juvohub podcast. And my name is Jonathan Saar and that's Baloo and I forgot to introduce him on the last couple of episodes and he's laying there, having a good nap and he didn't get offended. So he's a good boy. He's my boy. Anyway, I'm here for episode 59 all by my myself for hopefully the last episode. Mark has been out teaching CAM class. So Mark Howell from Howl Creative Concepts. So look forward to having him back in the show very, very soon. And I'm just wondering before we get into the show, do you have any other songs that you recommend that have the word alone or being by yourself or anything along that line? Just for fun. Share with me your songs that talk about being all by yourself or being alone. Cause I really like having Mark as my co-host, he is an awesome dude, so, but it's been interesting doing a couple episodes by myself too.

Jonathan (01:32): But am I really by myself when I've got, you know, I've got Baloo there? He doesn't say much on the shows, but he's a good boy and I love him to death. All right. Anyway, so let's get into this. Today I wanted to talk about reconnecting with your connections. So think about that for a minute. What does that mean? You know, on LinkedIn, you may have hundreds or thousands of connections you may have you know, especially pre COVID. Think of all the networking events, trade shows we've been to, you met a lot of people and then you're like, you know what? I haven't heard from that person a long time. And I had two people do that to me in the last few months. And I can't tell you how happy it made me just random reaching out, sending me a text, asking for a quick call, you know, just, Hey, I haven't talked to you in a while.

Jonathan (02:30): How have you been just checking in? I'm like, that is really, really, really awesome, really awesome. You know, I need to do that and I need to make a show about it. Apparently reconnecting with your connections, you know, people you just haven't seen or talked to in some time. People that have made an impact in your life, people that you loved hanging out with at the show, people that you just, you know, you love the content that they share, reconnect with your connections. So let's talk about three different ways that we can go about doing that. Well, first of all, you need to be there. So stay connected with your network. You know, that's really important spend some time, you know, seeing what they're doing. And again, there has to be balance, you know, you've got other responsibilities and obligations, so it's a matter of it being just part of your routine, what's happening with your colleagues, whether it's on LinkedIn or Instagram or something along that line, any of those social platforms, but stay connected with them, you know, be aware of what's going on.

Jonathan (03:39): Take note of, you know, one of my favorite things on LinkedIn is, you know, job positions changes. People have, you know, been they've been promoted or they have decided to take another position with another company and they're sharing that, you know, that's just awesome. I like paying attention to those things cause it helps me see, you know, what's going on. Going on with my connections the way I go about doing that. And I'll tell you for me, it's about, I'll spend probably about 15 to 30 minutes each evening, just going through my socials. It's literally in my mental calendar. Now you may decide that it needs to go into an actual calendar to remind you, but the point is, do you have a regular time that you are on socials to actually do that? Because then all of a sudden what happens if you don't have a regular time, then time does what time usually does and it just flies by.

Jonathan (04:50): And then you realize that you haven't been on with your network in months. And sometimes, you know, I've talked to someone it's been years before, since they've been on kind of nurturing in keeping connected with, with their network. So that's really, really important. And number three, and this kind of circles back to what I experienced go the extra mile, the couple of individuals that did that, it just, it did it totally warmed my heart. I'm like, this is so awesome that they reached out and just took a moment to say hi and say, Hey, I haven't, I haven't talked to you in a while. How are things going? What's new and exciting. What's happening with Market Me Social what's Juvohub now, just genuinely interested in what's happening in my life and in my career right now. And so I really, really appreciate that.

Jonathan (05:45): So it was a good lesson for me that I know I need to do better and go the extra mile. So let's all do our best to go the extra mile, stay with our network, you know, make sure we do it on a consistent basis, reconnect with our connections. And that way we just, we feel part, you know, especially since we've been so we've, many of us have felt so disconnected, look for opportunities to reconnect with your connection.
