GB105: Women in Business: Kate Reuther- Uptown Stories
For this week, we have a conversation with Founder, Kate Reuther of Uptown Stories. Listen in now and enjoy as we celebrate Women in Business.
Kate’s (she/her/hers) bio…Kate is the founder and director of Uptown Stories with the mission of providing young writers the chance to discover and develop their inner voices. Over the past ten years, Uptown Stories has offered nearly 200 writing workshops, and championed the voices of more than 1,500 kids in Manhattan’s uptown neighborhoods. Before Uptown Stories, Katetaught middle and high school Humanities for over 25 years, in both public and private schools, including the Tompkins Square Middle School, Calhoun, Fieldston, and Bank Street. Her own fiction has appeared in The Madison Review, Brain Child, Salamander, and The Ledge. Kate is a life-long New Yorker and has been living in Washington Heights since 2003 with her husband and two children.
More about Uptown Stories:Based in Washington Heights, Uptown Stories offers after-school, weekend, and summer creative writing workshops for children ages 7-17, led by rock-star teachers, who are also professional authors and artists. We want young people to understand they have the autonomy and ability to write anything they want, to tell their own stories. We want students whose voices are traditionally less heard, and whose stories are less often told, to know their stories matter regardless of national origin, race, citizenship status, or economic status. Our future leaders are young right now. Even if writing is not their primary calling, they must be equipped to expressthemselves and trust in their own imagination. Writing doesn’t have to be an “assignment;” it is a tool, a refuge, even a piece of them. Each workshop ends with a celebratory reading, and publication of a paperback anthology, so every student leaves our program as a published author. To ensure our program is accessible to our ethnically and economically diverse community, our tuition is “pay-what-you-can.” Uptown Stories creates an exciting, challenging, and supportive community in which young authors thrive.
