S2E20 – Abortion in the Ancient World (Part 1)

May 25, 2022

(01:50) Law of the Day – “When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be fined, as the woman’s husband shall impose on him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if there is harm, then you shall pay life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.” (Exodus 21:22-25)

(06:05) Abortion in the Ancient World – Today I begin a series studying abortion and infanticide in the ancient world. Surprisingly, and sadly, the ancient Romans and Greeks practiced abortion, utilizing both drugs and surgical instruments. Many of the reasons for doing this were similar to the reasons people give today, one of them being the idea of necessity due to poverty. There were ancient Greeks and Romans who spoke out against abortion and infanticide, just as there were those who spoke in favor of it. Interestingly, things do not really change until Christianity begins to wield influence throughout the Roman Empire.
