A continued commitment means he knew a lot earlier than January 5, 2017 about this investigation. Everyone else knew well before then that it was a hoax. Rice's Memo memorializes an Oval Office Comey debriefing of the former president. There is no way he was never debriefed on that day and/or previous days about the fact that the Russia Investigation had nothing on Trump and his advisers.
