Assessment and COVID-19 - Episode 1, The Tipping Seesaw. Insights from the e-Assessment Association Community

May 13, 2020

In the first episode of a new podcast series by the eAA we welcome guests from the e-Assessment Association Community and discuss the impact of COVID-19.

eAA board member, Gareth Hopkins from City & Guilds, talks to Nikhil Sharma of TCS iON, and John Winkley and Gavin Busuttil-Reynaud from AlphaPlus Consultancy about the impact of COVID-19.

With perspectives from the UK to India, guests talk about the differing government approaches to the summer exams for schools along with the unquestionable lasting impact.

Guests discuss the lack of resilience in summative exams, the digital divide, the potential of remote proctoring, and ask the question: Will this be the tipping of the seesaw for school-leaving exams?

Gareth explores examples such as the Welsh Government's National Testing programme, and the potential of any time adaptive testing as an alternative to summative exams. Also, how distance learning tools such as Glassroom, provided both teaching and social access to over 12,000 schools and universities.

Finally, Gareth, Nikhil, John, and Gavin discuss the changing priorities for teachers, and how, although their teaching activities have given way to student welfare. They have huge potential to demonstrate that they can be a real powerhouse for change and when presented with a challenge, can be extremely creative and adaptable.
