The Context of White Supremacy welcomes the return of Dr. Vanessa Grubbs. A "kidney doctor (nephrologist), former primary care doctor, patient (kidney donor), and someone who loves somebody living with kidney failure," Dr. Grubbs visited Seattle in 2017 to discuss her freshly published book, Hundreds of Interlaced Fingers. The book examines what she learned while on the journey to marrying her husband, who suffered from kidney failure. She loaned him one of her extras on the way to alter and made note of the awful treatment doled out to black patients in need of a kidney transplant. In fact, she changed her career focus to nephrology after all she observed. Fast forward to 2020, and the world continues to grapple with the coronavirus. Last week, reports indicated that the virus may cause damage to kidneys, and Dr. Grubbs was the first person on Gus's mind.
