Rep. Ford on Critical Race Theory Academy

May 11, 2021

Today we sit down with Illinois State Representative La Shawn K Ford, 8th District, to discuss his proposal to create a critical race theory academy for police to attend and learn about how race impacts policing and the administration of justice.

Going through this academy would be mandatory for any individuals seeking to become a police officer before the state could certify any new officer. Also, it would be mandatory continuing education for current officers so in theory all police officers within the State of Illinois would have to go through this academy within some period of time after the law goes in to effect.

Critical race theory is using the lens of race to examine laws, the legal process, and the administration of justice in an effort to uncover bias within any or all of these areas. The recent deaths of Adam Toledo and Anthony Alvarez underscore the need for this conversation at this moment. Police supporters and large parts of white Chicago refuse to admit either or both shootings had anything to do with race as they believe, strangely, that an interaction between to people from different races can be completely devoid of any impact of race. They shout down any attempt to even ask a question about the impact of race because it simply cannot exist. Their refusal to engage in the conversation about the impact of race demonstrates the need to have the conversation about race. Police violence is unfortunately concentrated against a certain segment of the population both in Chicago and around the country.
