About: Peggy Robles-Alvarado is a resilient New York City tenured educator and a 2014 BRIO performance poet award winner. She is a CantoMundo, Home School, and Academy for Teachers Fellow as well as a two time International Latino Book Award winner and author of Conversations With My Skin and Homenaje A Las Guerreras/ Homage to the Warrior Women. She has been published in NACLA (The North American Congress on Latin America), Letras and Nuyorican Women Writers Vol.2 of Centro Voices: by the Center for Puerto Rican Studies, The Bronx Memoir Project, The BX Files Anthology, Luna Luna Magazine, Hyperallergic.com, Upliftt.com, Dealmas.net and Sofrito For Your Soul. Peggy’s poetry will also be included in the forthcoming 2016 collection of Afro-Latino Poets published by Arte Publico Press and she will be a presenter at AWP 2016 in Los Angeles. As an initiate in the Lukumi and Palo spiritual systems, Peggy uses her experiences and her incredible rhythmic energy to challenge social taboos, celebrate womanhood, and honor cultural traditions in a modern day setting. She is the recipient of the 2015 Areito Award for Poet of the Year, the 2013 Tato Laviera Poetic Teamster Award, 2012 Mujeres Destacadas Award and the Womyn Warrior Award. Peggy has been featured on HBO Habla Women, Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Poets and Writers Fifth Annual Connecting Cultures Reading, and The BADD!ASS Women Festival as well as other culturally notable venues.
