Bond Riddell: strong markets but weak bond demand

January 21, 2016

This week Guy Foster, Head of Research, talks to Mike Riddell, Fund Manager at Allianz Global Investors, about the forces driving bonds markets in a tumultuous week for markets. We talk about the prospects for interest rates in light of recent comments from Mark Carney and other MPC members. We talk about the government bond market which was very strong despite very weak demand at the week’s five year bond auction.  We discuss the reliance of the UK on overseas funding and whether the Brexit referendum might make that funding less secure. Finally we also talk about concerns that high debt levels might bring about a repeat of the financial crisis.
