Hot Property

March 19, 2015

In this week's podcast Ben Gutteridge and Guy Foster talk to Jason Baggaley, manager of the Standard Life Property Income investment trust about the outlook for UK commercial property.

With the FTSE 100 breaching 7,000 for the first time investors are becoming concerned about the sustainability of the 6 year old bull market. Valuations look astronomical for bonds with some saying the same for equities too. Does property offer a means to diversify away from conventional asset classes? Or can valuations only be justified in the context of low interest rates? The recent strength of property has been driven by weak supply and improving economic growth, trends which look set to continue.  Bank lending for property development has stabilised but the overall industry remains supply constrained while trends in employment are echoed by investors demand.
