Hand and Heart by Elizabeth Gaskell

August 20, 2021

In today's episode of Bookshelf Odyssey Podcast, We continue our exploration of Victorian  writer, Elizabeth Gaskell. Today, I read to you her charming morality tale, "Hand and Heart". It tells the story of little Tom Fletcher and begins with his desire to have "a great deal of money" in order to be able to do good deeds. His mother teaches him that money isn't necessary to be able to show kindness to others. This is a marvelous story that celebrates kindness and compassion - and though the story was written in 1849, it carries a powerful message that is needed in our world today.
