212. Occasional binge drinking linked to multiple health issues

June 21, 2022

Many adults think that moderate drinking is safe, but a new study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine suggests that binge drinking, even occasionally, might lead to numerous health consequences. Researchers followed 1,300 drinkers over nine years. They found that women drinking an average of more than one drink a day and men drinking more than two drinks a day – or five or more drinks on the same occasion – was associated with multiple alcohol problems nine years later. In fact, people who binged, meaning they had five or more drinks in a row on a single day or night, were five times more likely to experience alcohol-related problems, like physical injuries and emotional and psychological issues. The researchers suggest that drinking seven drinks on a Friday or Saturday night is far worse for your health than drinking one each night with dinner, even though the average alcohol for the week is the same.
