95. TikTok might be the worst social media for your sleep

January 11, 2022

Social media before bed appears to disrupt our sleep, and TikTok appears to be the worst, according to a survey by the sleep science platform Sleep Junkie. They surveyed over 2000 people and found that over three-quarters of people use their phones right up until they go to sleep. A second survey of 128 of these bedtime social media users revealed that people using TikTok before bed took an average of one hour, seven minutes to fall asleep. While not much better, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and Facebook caused users to take between 45 and 58 minutes to fall asleep. Experts believe the blue light from phones, and the stimulation provided by these social media platforms, keep people alert and make it harder to fall asleep.
