Episode 049: Assessing & Communicating Value in Healthcare

March 16, 2022

How do we assess and communicate value in healthcare?

We hear about “value-based healthcare” a lot. The topic seems to permeate discussion around reimbursement models, public health policy, and even professional certification & regulatory issues. The problem is, no one seems to have a clear definition of “value-based care”, and for good reason. Healthcare, unlike other industries, poses many challenges in regards to determining value. This is mainly due to the fact that there are typically 4 distinct stakeholders in the space: policy-makers, payers, providers, and patients. Add to that complexity the current environment where the end user typically isn’t the one paying for the services, and you see how challenging any value assessment can become.

So, this week, we’re diving deep into the topic of value assessment and communication in healthcare. My guest this week, Craig Solid, PhD returns to the show to discuss his new book, Practical Strategies to Assess Value in Health Care. Craig was on the show a bit ago to talk about Return on Investment in healthcare. In that discussion, we spoke briefly about some of the fundamental concepts behind value and value determinations, but we didn’t get too deep into that topic. In this episode we discuss some of the fundamental economic principals behind defining value, assessing value, and communicating value specifically as it relates to the healthcare industry.

What we cover in this Episode:
  • An overview of Value
  • How technology and innovation can help stakeholders with value assessments in healthcare
  • Using data to improve value assessment
  • The importance of communication & understanding the intended audience when completing value assessments
  • Using a patient-centered approach to assessment of value, understanding “value to whom”
  • How to achieve Better Outcomes by assessing value and using that information to drive QI initiatives
