Episode 045: 7 Critical Practice Management Mistakes

January 19, 2022

Let’s talk about mistakes

For those of us in leadership positions in healthcare, particularly in group practices, dangers lie in the myriad of decisions we must make each day. Whether it’s scheduling procedures, onboarding process, and even recruiting/hiring systems, group practice administrators and managers have a lot on their plate. While many, myself included, understand the importance of SOP (standard operating procedures) & systems, it can be difficult to think about removing themselves from the day-to-day decision-making that goes on in the practice. While this may provide a bit of control over the processes or procedures in the practice, it also poses a risk. This situation can, and often does, turn the administrator, director, or manager into a bottleneck, rather than a gateway. This results in decreased profitability, increased workload and stress on the management team, and ultimately, decreased overall quality and efficiency of care at the practice.

So, how do we prevent ourselves (or our managers) from becoming the bottleneck in the practice? My guest this week, Paul Wright, says the answer is in systems. In fact, he’s implemented his strategy in his own, multi-facility practice in Australia; one that he happened to manage almost entirely remotely. He took his process and put it into a program that he called Practiceology.

What we cover in this Episode:
  • The 7 critical mistakes practice owners & managers make that cost them profitability
  • Using Technology to manage your practice
  • The importance of recruitment & team-building in your practice
  • Understanding differing perspectives of value for patients & staff members
  • Why there are only 2 (YES 2) factors which determine the success of any health business – and how
failing to understand either of these will leave you chained to your health business forever.
  • The single sheet of paper, all health businesses MUST use – which will add 30% to your bottom line –
    almost overnight.
  • Why your accountant is the last person you want to be giving you information on the financial
performance of your health business – and the P and L calculation method which will instantly tell you
how many hours you should be spending with patients each week.
  • How improving the profitability and performance of the practice promotes Better Outcomes for patients
