2021-11-01 | Baby Ahoy Season 2 – Lindsay’s Pregnancy & Birth Journey – Part 1

November 01, 2021

Lindsay is originally from the US. She and her husband, Brent moved to Amsterdam, The Netherlands as expats. They lived in The Netherlands for Six years and moved back to the United States in the summer of 2021. Lindsay was enthusiastic, kind, and flexible to give me the time to record her incredible birth stories. Between taking care of two small kids, unpacking her boxes, and managing a seven-hour time difference, we accomplished to record her stories and I am forever grateful to her. In today’s episode Lindsay shares her experience of navigating and finding her feet with the Dutch maternity system. Working with a set of expat friendly midwives in Amsterdam, their preparation for their birth with a Birth Prep course and a HypnoBirthing course.

Lindsay shares how she & Brent embraced the whole Dutch maternity system of wanting to give birth with less interventions and going the Dutch way, Comparison with the American system, Giving birth to her first baby, a baby boy, Benjamin, at the Geboorte Hotel at Amsterdam and her experience with the Kraamzorg in the first week of Postpartum. Please note, the Geboorte Hotel is no longer available for births. Please check geboortecentrum.nl for other services.

At 8 odd mins of the conversation, you will hear Lindsay mention the cost of the birth in The Netherlands as free, but the health insurance here would cover the expense.

At 23:30s of the conversation Lindsay mentions ECV – External Cephalic Version – a procedure used to turn the baby from a breech position or side-lying (transverse) position into a head-down (vertex) position before labor begins. When successful, version makes it possible for you to try a vaginal birth. In continuation, Lindsay also mentions Moxa Technique – which is Moxibustion – a form of heat therapy that can be done by a well-trained acupuncturist & traditional Chinese medicine practitioner.

23:15s Lindsay mentions Vaginal Breech Birth as a birth option – If your baby is in Breech position and you would like to know more then you need to speak to your midwife for a reference to an OB/GYN in a hospital.
